PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
SUMMER 2010
Hello
BMECC Members and Fellow Hikers,
Recently, BMECC had the opportunity to
partner with Kutztown Middle School to present an AT Family Day. Parents,
students and teachers came together to learn about the Appalachian Trail and
experience the outdoors. BMECC members gave short presentations about hiking
safety, trail maintenance and Leave No Trace principles. Members led hikes in
various areas of the Hamburg Reservoir, which included a chance meeting with a
Section Hiker named “Lovely Day.” A visit to Windsor Furnace Shelter gave the
students their first look at life on the Trail.
We look forward to a continued partnership
with Kutztown Middle School in being able to share our enthusiasm about the
outdoors and the Appalachian Trail. Hopefully, we were able to provide parents
with additional ideas about future summer activities for their families.
The summer is always full of activities for
BMECC as well. The arboretum crew is busy at Rentschler Arboretum almost every
Friday. There are gardens to weed, grass to mow and general cleanup. Help is
always welcomed. Reward yourself with a beautiful view of the Blue Mountains
and don’t forget to hike the blazed trail around the perimeter of this 34 acre
gem.
Another summer suggestion would be a visit
to the recently dedicated AT Museum. It is located at Pine Grove Furnace State
Park in a 200 year old grist mill. The surrounding area offers camping,
swimming and, of course, hiking on the Appalachian Trail. You would travel Route
81 South to exit 37 to reach the park. For more information about the museum
visit atmuseum.org.
Summer is a fun time to be in the Great
Outdoors. Get together with family and friends and choose a new adventure. You
might be surprised what is available to you in your own backyard.
See you on the Trail. Enjoy your Summer!
